Farewell 2009, hello 2010

It is the New Year and it is time for great food, family, reflection, predictions and top ten lists. Here, I have collected my top ten list of top ten lists. They are divided between reviews of Linux related events from 2009 and predictions for 2010 and beyond. This list of lists was presented at the Kitchener Waterloo Linux User Group at the January 2010 meeting. read more »

Hardware hacks for Wireless Routers

Have you ever wondered what you could do with consumer electronics, a soldering iron and some spare time?

This project takes an ordinary wireless router, adds extra memory and a GPS antenna to make a cool mobile wireless survey rig.

Slides from a presentation that I've delivered internationally. As usual, the slides are pretty spare if I'm not narrating them for you. Contact me to schedule a presentation for your group.

Slides printed with speaking notes, as a pdf. read more »

Introduction to OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap.org creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways. read more »

Open Source Investment (speaking notes)

These are my rather spare speaking notes from a presentation I did in 2006 with a colleague. I covered the scope and nature of investment in Open Source and presented it to a technical audience in an informal setting at a Communitech "KWITers" meeting.
