Board election data 2014

rweait's picture

This post includes the raw output from the online voting service used for the OSMF 2014 AGM voting matters. Also included is an html-ified transcription with pretty bar graphs from the original pdf. Find the orignals below.

As noted elsewhere, a typo propagated into the election and so the records show a candidate Paul Normal who we know as candidate Paul Norman. I have left those typos in place.

[Transcription begins. Apologies in advance for errors.]

Filling of vacant board positions

Counting votes using Scottish STV. There are 8 candidates competing for 3 seats. The number of votes is 219 and there
were 218 valid votes.

The bar charts below show the vote counts for each candidate in each round. Place the mouse over a bar to see the
number of votes.
[hover feature is not available in this transcription]

  • Yellow — Votes carried over from the previous round.
  • Green — Votes received in this round.
  • Red — Votes transferred away in this round.

A candidate's votes in a round is the sum of the yellow and green bars. Since the green and red bars represent votes
being transferred, the sum of the green and red bars is the same.

The exhausted bar represents votes where the voter did not indicate a next preference and thus there were no
candidates to transfer the vote to. The threshold bar (where shown) indicates the number of votes that ensures that a
candidate will win a seat.

Round 1

Count of first choices. Candidate Frederik Ramm has reached the threshold and is elected. Candidates have surplus votes
so surplus votes will be transferred for the next round.

Round 2

Count after transferring surplus votes from Frederik Ramm with a transfer value of 23.00000/78.00000. No candidates
have surplus votes so candidates will be eliminated and their votes transferred for the next round.

Round 3

Count after eliminating Ethan Nelson and transferring votes. No candidates have surplus votes so candidates will be
eliminated and their votes transferred for the next round.

Round 4

Count after eliminating Marek Strassenburg-Kleciak and transferring votes. No candidates have surplus votes so
candidates will be eliminated and their votes transferred for the next round.

Round 5

Count after eliminating Randy Meech and transferring votes. Candidate Kathleen Danielson has reached the threshold
and is elected. Candidates have surplus votes so surplus votes will be transferred for the next round.

Round 6

Count after transferring surplus votes from Kathleen Danielson with a transfer value of 0.60253/55.60253. No candidates
have surplus votes so candidates will be eliminated and their votes transferred for the next round.

Round 7

Count after eliminating Peter Barth and transferring votes. No candidates have surplus votes so candidates will be
eliminated and their votes transferred for the next round.

Round 8

Count after eliminating Steve Coast and transferring votes. Candidate Paul Normal has reached the threshold and is
elected.

Code?

Sure. Here you go. qdstats is a quick and dirty script to extract some of the numbers I've been using to make the graphs in earlier articles.

Also, install openSTV so that you can run the election results for yourself.
